Powering Down to Grow Green: VaraMahalakshmi Silks’ Earth Day Commitment

This Earth Day, Kancheepuram VaraMahalakshmi Silks took a meaningful step in honouring our planet. In all 68 of our stores, we turned off non-essential power for two hours, a simple but intentional pause to remind ourselves that sustainability begins with awareness.

But we didn’t stop there. For every saree purchased on Earth Day, we committed to planting one tree, turning each bill into a small promise to the earth.

“We’ve always believed that our traditions carry deeper meaning,” says Bharadwaj Rachamadugu, Managing Director of Sai Silks Kalamandir Ltd. “On Earth Day, we wanted our customers to take home more than a saree, something that lives, grows, and gives back.”

A Saree, A Sapling

The initiative, titled ‘A Saree, A Sapling’, will continue through the week. Every saree bought during this time comes with a sapling, inviting customers to plant and nurture it as a living part of their celebration.

Our Earth Day actions also included:

  • Running stores in natural light for part of the day
  • Switching off air conditioning and minimizing electricity use
  • Encouraging staff and customers to wear handloom or earthy-themed sarees
  • Using eco-conscious packaging where possible

Staying True to Our Roots

Kancheepuram VaraMahalakshmi Silks have always stood for more than just beautiful sarees. Our roots lie in craftsmanship, in heritage, and in conscious living. Supporting artisans, encouraging slow fashion, and keeping sustainability in mind, this has always been a part of how we do things.

  • This wasn’t a one-day event. It’s part of the journey we’re on,” says Bharadwaj.
  • Our traditions and our planet both deserve respect. And this is just one way we’re trying to do our part.

A Small Nudge to the Industry

In a world that moves fast, we believe there’s value in pausing, in thinking, and in acting responsibly. We hope our initiative encourages other brands, especially in retail, to find their own way to give back.

Because when tradition grows hand-in-hand with responsibility, the result is a legacy we can be proud of.
